    Most AI companies fail because they are designed as products rather than as operating layers embedded in real decision systems.

    Much of the current enthusiasm around artificial intelligence has taken the form of company creation. New firms appear daily, each presenting a novel application, interface, or workflow powered by increasingly capable models. The energy is real, and so is the technical progress. Yet the volume of activity obscures a quieter question: whether most of these companies need to exist at all.

    This is not a claim about the usefulness of the technology. AI is already valuable and will remain so. The concern is about organizational form. Treating AI as the primary reason for a company’s existence conflates capability with durability. It assumes that the presence of a powerful tool is sufficient justification for a standalone business. In many cases, it is not.

    The prevailing framing suggests that AI creates new categories of companies simply by enabling new kinds of outputs.
